The Shift is a project developed during the 48-hour collaboratorium Vizarts (‘where Film Talent and Techies explore the Future of interactive Real-Time Storytelling’) held by Aalborg University‘s professor Henrik Schønau Fog, volunteers, and former students of the Medialogy MA program.
The challenge was to create a narrative through a virtual location without recurring to any character. We were provided with the latest technology, as well as workshops, and inspirational HyperTalks from international talents.
We visualize the input data registered by the EEG by outputting it to a 3D sphere in the virtual environment. We made the scale of the sphere change based on the different spikes of the EEG waves.
We conceptualized this way of visualizing and use of brainwaves as a way to affect one’s control over one own brainwave by controlling the size of the sphere. Therefore, the virtual sphere will change depending on our own mental state when we look at it.
The trailer was designed before outputting the EEG data. Attendees at Vizarts were able to try our prototype and see how the sphere was affected by their brainwaves.
Based on this exploration, the concepts and visual identity of The Shift were designed, exploring simulations of VR experiences, graphic composition, and visual effects. Which afterward were combined with the design of the demo soundtrack, created with the data of beta waves.
