A board game about responsible ownership of dogs in Chile.

The Quiltro board game was developed throughout 2014 and finished in 2015. The game aims to educate Chilean families on responsible ownership of dogs considering their different needs (health, play, nutrition) and particular qualities derived from dogs’ context and age.

The game acts as an introduction of concepts such as guaranteeing the best possible health, good coexistence, understanding of body language, and assessment of having a dog as a pet. The game’s final goal is to prevent dog abandonment and reduce the number of stray dogs.

The Game

The Game

Quiltro is a board game for two to six players, in which the players race their dog tokens from start to finish according to the rolls of a single die. The players take their dog for a walk around the city and have to find their way home. Along the way, the players have to draw cards, which forces them to act out mimicry, draw and answer trivia, in order to roll the dice again.

Research

Research

The statistics and research that inspired this project were quite alarming. According to them, there were 1.142.037 dogs as pets in Santiago and  2.841.146 at the national level. And there was an estimation that the total dog population (including stray dogs) was in the proportion of 1 dog every 5 inhabitants. In the United States, the estimation was 1 to 3,6 inhabitants.

According to the research and public organisms assessment, there was null responsible ownership. The majority of dogs, both with owners and stray, were able to roam completely free and unsupervised in the streets. Many of them were not being neutered.
